Prep Your Lawn for the Summer

Is your lawn prepared for the upcoming summer?

Fertilization and broadleaf weed control are essential at this time of year, and will lead to a healthy, vibrant lawn this summer!

Nutrient Absorption

Fertilizer provides essential nutrients that promote healthy grass growth, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. When combined with weed control products, these nutrients are absorbed more efficiently, as the weed control treatment eliminates competition from broadleaf weeds. This lets your lawn make the most of the applied fertilizers.

Weed Prevention

Take preventative measures before weeds grow! Regularly fertilizing and applying a broadleaf weed control treatment creates an environment that doesn’t promote weeds. The extra nutrients provided by fertilization help your grass establish a dense, healthy turf that naturally prevents weeds from taking root.

Combining Fertilization and Weed Control

Lawn Care Companies Howell, Howell Lawn Care Companies
Did you know that you can apply fertilizer and weed control products at the same time?

Maintaining a lush, vibrant lawn requires more than just regular mowing and watering. Fertilization and weed control are essential components of lawn care that work together to promote healthy grass. These tasks are often done separately, but there are several benefits to doing them at the same time.

Both fertilization and weed control are most effective when applied during a lawn's active growth periods, usually in the spring and fall. By doing them at the same time, you can cut save time and maximize effectiveness. Applying weed control products alongside fertilizer ensures weeds are targeted while they’re actively growing, stopping them in their tracks.

What’s the Difference Between Warm-Season and Cool-Season Grass?

lawn care companies livingston county
Warm-season grass grows best at 80-95 °F. Examples include: St. Augustine, Zoysia, Bermuda, Bahia, and centipede grass. Warm-season grass grows vigorously during the summer months. You should begin feeding in spring (late March to April) and continue every 6 to 8 weeks until early fall (August to September).

Cool-season grass grows best at 65-75 °F. Examples include Kentucky bluegrass, ryegrass, fescues, and bent grass. Cool-season grass grows vigorously during spring and fall, with a tendency to go dormant during the heat of summer. Feed twice in spring (April to June) and twice in fall (August to October). Add in summer feedings every 6 to 8 weeks only if you irrigate the lawn to keep it actively growing.

How to Keep Salt from Damaging Your Lawn

lawn care companies in livingston county
During a cold Michigan winter, ice buildup can be a big concern.

Slipping on the sidewalk can lead to serious injuries, and your driveway can be treacherous after a heavy snowfall. This is where chemical de-icers and rock salt come in handy to add traction.

Unfortunately, rock salt has one big disadvantage: it can seriously damage your lawn, especially after repeated uses in the winter.

How can you protect your lawn?

  1. Only spread rock salt on paved areas. Be careful when you throw salt using a spreader.
  2. Use a short silt fence guard around your grass to keep salt and melted runoff from spilling into your lawn.

Are You Giving Your Lawn Enough Water?

We’ve had a hot start to summer in Michigan, with temps reaching near 90 degrees as early as mid-May! When the dog days of summer arrive, it’s important to recognize the signs of heat stress on your lawn.

Proper watering is critical to maintaining the health of your lawn throughout the summer!

  • When to water: For most of the year, your lawn gets enough water from rain. But during unusually dry periods, your turn needs help quenching its thirst. Watering early in the morning is important to keep your grass hydrated. The best time to set up your sprinkler is between 5 and 9am, which allows the grass and soil to properly soak in the water. On the hottest days of summer, try to mow even earlier, before the dew dries. If you can’t water in the early morning, early evening or overnight is the next best time.
  • How much to water: In general, your lawn should receive about one inch of water per week to allow for the best hydration. In the absence of a helpful rain, you need to water your lawn by hand or with a sprinkler system. On the hottest days of summer, as much as two inches of water per week may be necessary.

Remember, overwatering can cause more damage to your lawn than underwatering. You don’t want to drown your grass! Watering your lawn every day can ruin your turf.

How to Winterize Your Lawn and Gardening Gear for a Storm

Winterizing your yard and garden doesn’t stop with the plants.

You’ll also need to bring your gear indoors for storms or freezing weather.

Make sure you remember the following garden and yard gear needs to come indoors to protect them through the winter:

  • Hoses must be drained, disconnected, and put in the garage for winter storage, or water inside can expand and burst the hose or the pipe leading outdoors. Don’t use that spigot until the weather has completely warmed up and any ice has the chance to melt!

  • Bring in all gardening gear so it doesn’t rust over the winter (and you don’t lose it in the snow!)

  • If you’re expecting a big winter storm, bring in all lawn furniture, unsecured trash cans, and buckets or toys. These can blow around in a storm.

  • Do you have any leaf piles remaining? Remember to dispose of them before a freeze. Leaf piles that get wet can freeze to the ground, leaving this project for spring if you forget!

Read the full list of winter storm prep tips from a professional lawn care company in Livingston County on our website!

Hire a Professional Lawn Care Company in Livingston County to Recover Your Lawn After a Storm

Hopefully you won’t have to deal with damage from a storm, but if your garden or lawn was hurt by falling trees, blowing equipment, or other freeze damage, you can get them back in shape in no time.
If your lawn was damaged by a falling tree, a flood, or a freeze, look up professionals who can help restore turf and schedule them for first thing in the spring so they can fix your lawn before it’s too late to regrow grass.

If you’re stuck inside during a winter storm, pass the time by plotting out your yard and garden for spring, with a to-do list that includes planning out new annual or perennial plants with proper recommended spacing and light/water requirements, shopping for plants, and replacing any worn out gear.

If your garden or yard need professional help after a storm, you can contact Ever So Green for an estimate on lawn care services. We will help you get your lawn and garden looking like new again, or even better.

Tips to Prepare Your Garden and Yard for a Winter Storm

Your house is ready for a winter storm, but what about your grounds and garden?

If you have a beautiful new garden or trees planted around your yard, there are some things you can do to protect them from extreme weather.

  • Trim dead sections off any unruly fall plants. Make sure you look up the specific species of plant to see if it prefers a fall pruning like roses do, or if you should leave it alone to protect it from freezing.

  • Mulch around garden beds and sensitive plants several inches deep at a minimum. This can help prevent roots of perennial plants from freezing, which ensures they regrow in the spring. Check out which plants you have in your garden that are “frost-hardy” and the minimum temperatures they can tolerate. The plants that prefer higher temperatures need at least a few inches of mulch.

  • If you have temperature-sensitive trees in your yard, wrap them in a burlap with staking underneath to prevent the wrap from touching foliage. This protects them from the wind and extreme freezes.

Visit our website for our full list of winter lawn care tips.

Want a Lush Lawn in Spring? Take Care of it in the Winter

Do you know how to maintain your lawn during the winter?

Have you even thought about your grass since the first snow fell?

Like many of us in the Midwest, you’ve probably switched out the lawn mower for a snow shovel.

If you struggle to get your lawn back in shape in the spring, there may be a few tasks you can take care of before the first frost:

  • Fertilize – In the fall, have your lawn aerated. Aerating your lawn in about October of next year will give it a chance to breathe before the grass goes dormant. After you’ve aerated, you should also fertilize to give your lawn the nutrients it needs to prepare for winter.
  • Keep the lawn clean – If leaves have piled up during fall, there’s a chance your lawn could suffocate before winter. Leaves that are left behind could also invite disease if they’re too wet.
  • Avoid a lot of lawn traffic – When the lawn is frosted or dormant, try not to walk on it too much.

Preparing Your Lawn for the Winter

Winter lawn care is unlike lawn care during the rest of the year, but it is still very important to the health of your lawn. Following these helpful tips will have your yard ready to re-emerge in the spring:

  1. For your final mowing, mow your grass a little bit shorter for the final mow of the season. Mulching your leaves provides additional compost and organic matter as well as helps leaves blow off naturally.
  2. Keep the lawn clean – Make sure you’ve raked the last bit of leaves that have fallen from your trees. Your lawn needs to breathe and leaving piled up leaves can damage your yard. Try to avoid leaving any other objects on your lawn during the winter - things like furniture or toys. This will ensure your grass gets enough sunlight.
  3. Maintain your lawn mower – After the final mow of the season, you SHOULD perform a check up on your mower before properly storing it for the season.

How To Care For Your Lawn in Fall To Protect Your Grass

Your lawn has served you well all summer. How do you make sure your fall lawn care protects your grass for a beautiful lawn in the spring? Here’s how you know your lawn needs some fall lawn care to make it come back strong next year:

  • Your lawn is looking dry after a long, hot summer
  • Your lawn has thin patches or bare soil showing
  • Your grass is being pushed out by weeds

Even if you’ve taken great care of your lawn for many years, sometimes your grass needs a boost of nutrition or some extra care in the fall to make sure it weathers the winter for another great spring.

Fall Lawn Maintenance Schedule To Protect Your Grass Over Winter

If you have thin patches in your lawn by fall, you might need help removing grubs under the lawn, or to have your lawn aerated to prevent soil compaction or a thick mat of roots from preventing a healthy lawn from growing back. Especially if you see thin grass in areas where your lawn receives a lot of heavy traffic, you might need aeration to ensure your grass grows back thick next year. This is important to do in the fall to allow grass to grow rather than weeds, which benefit more from aeration if you leave it off until spring.

Keep cutting your lawn until the first hard frost, because it will keep growing! Two and a half to three inches is just the right length. If your lawn is getting less than one inch of rain per week, keep watering through the fall until the frost, then disconnect any hoses and flush the irrigation system to prevent frozen pipes and spigots.

Essential Tips for Fall Lawn Maintenance from a Professional Lawncare Company

Do you want to keep your lawn lush and green before winter sets in?

Are you wondering how to take care of your lawn during the autumn months?

Keeping up with lawn maintenance during the fall is essential for preserving your grass through the winter.

Be sure to keep mowing to a height of 3 inches until the grass stops growing.

Consider aerating and dethatching your lawn—fall is a perfect time to do so!

Make sure to fertilize your lawn! Grass goes into a high-absorption mode in the fall to prepare for the winter months. This makes September and October a great time to give your grass extra nutrients to help it thrive through the winter.

Fall is also a good time to take care of weeds. Weeds also go into a high-absorption mode to prepare for the winter, meaning that any weed control you use will be more effective. Many weeds undergo a second bloom and drop another round of seeds in the fall. To protect your lawn, dig them out or use herbicide before they bloom.

What Every Homeowner Should Know When Taking Care of their Lawn in the Fall

Are you looking for a way to keep your lawn healthy through the winter?

Are you wondering what you should do to improve your lawn health in the fall?

Keeping up with lawn care throughout autumn can help you maintain green and healthy grass for the rest of the year. Fall lawn maintenance is essential for preserving your lawn over the winter!

Learn from one of the top lawn care companies in Livingston County—keep your lawn healthy through the fall months with these tips!

  1. Take care of the falling leaves that pile up on your lawn! Mulch dry leaves into tiny pieces by running over them with a lawnmower – or rake them up the old-fashioned way.
  2. Patches of lawn often die in the summertime, which is why you should reseed any dead patches in the fall to let grass grow back before the cold months.
  3. Don’t stop mowing! Keep cutting your grass to a height of 3 inches until the first freeze of winter, when it stops growing.

Overwhelmed by Fertilizer Options? We Can Help!

Lawn fertilizer isn’t rocket science but it’s not as simple as picking up the first bag you see at the big box store, either.

If your lawn is sparse, or patchy or full of weeds, start with a soil test to see what nutrients might be missing. When you have the right product, only use as much as you need. Too much fertilizer can give your lawn a chemical burn and runoff from wasted fertilizer adds to algae growth in Michigan lakes and streams.

Read more on our website!

We can help feed your lawn just right. We know the right products to use, how often to apply fertilizer to give you a beautiful green lawn that will last all season.

Catch Frustrating Lawn Problems Early with These Tips

Got grass issues?

Your lawn needs just a little bit of extra care to stay green and healthy in spring, summer, and fall in Michigan.

Now and then, check that it has enough water. Poke a screwdriver or tent stake in the dirt. If it goes in easy, you’re fine. If the soil is hard and dry, give it some water. Compacted soil doesn’t absorb water well. If you notice that you’re wearing a path in your lawn, loosen up the soil and give your grass a chance to grow deeper roots. It’s not common in most residential areas, but if you’re in a wet area, you might have fungi that can damage the plant life.
