How to Winterize Your Lawn and Gardening Gear for a Storm

Winterizing your yard and garden doesn’t stop with the plants.

You’ll also need to bring your gear indoors for storms or freezing weather.

Make sure you remember the following garden and yard gear needs to come indoors to protect them through the winter:

  • Hoses must be drained, disconnected, and put in the garage for winter storage, or water inside can expand and burst the hose or the pipe leading outdoors. Don’t use that spigot until the weather has completely warmed up and any ice has the chance to melt!

  • Bring in all gardening gear so it doesn’t rust over the winter (and you don’t lose it in the snow!)

  • If you’re expecting a big winter storm, bring in all lawn furniture, unsecured trash cans, and buckets or toys. These can blow around in a storm.

  • Do you have any leaf piles remaining? Remember to dispose of them before a freeze. Leaf piles that get wet can freeze to the ground, leaving this project for spring if you forget!

Hopefully you won’t have to deal with damage from a storm, but if your garden or lawn was hurt by falling trees, blowing equipment, or other freeze damage, you can get them back in shape in no time.
If your lawn was damaged by a falling tree, a flood, or a freeze, look up professionals who can help restore turf and schedule them for first thing in the spring so they can fix your lawn before it’s too late to regrow grass.

If you’re stuck inside during a winter storm, pass the time by plotting out your yard and garden for spring, with a to-do list that includes planning out new annual or perennial plants with proper recommended spacing and light/water requirements, shopping for plants, and replacing any worn out gear.
