How to Winterize Your Lawn and Gardening Gear for a Storm

Winterizing your yard and garden doesn’t stop with the plants.

You’ll also need to bring your gear indoors for storms or freezing weather.

Make sure you remember the following garden and yard gear needs to come indoors to protect them through the winter:

  • Hoses must be drained, disconnected, and put in the garage for winter storage, or water inside can expand and burst the hose or the pipe leading outdoors. Don’t use that spigot until the weather has completely warmed up and any ice has the chance to melt!

  • Bring in all gardening gear so it doesn’t rust over the winter (and you don’t lose it in the snow!)

  • If you’re expecting a big winter storm, bring in all lawn furniture, unsecured trash cans, and buckets or toys. These can blow around in a storm.

  • Do you have any leaf piles remaining? Remember to dispose of them before a freeze. Leaf piles that get wet can freeze to the ground, leaving this project for spring if you forget!

Tips to Prepare Your Garden and Yard for a Winter Storm

Your house is ready for a winter storm, but what about your grounds and garden?

If you have a beautiful new garden or trees planted around your yard, there are some things you can do to protect them from extreme weather.

  • Trim dead sections off any unruly fall plants. Make sure you look up the specific species of plant to see if it prefers a fall pruning like roses do, or if you should leave it alone to protect it from freezing.

  • Mulch around garden beds and sensitive plants several inches deep at a minimum. This can help prevent roots of perennial plants from freezing, which ensures they regrow in the spring. Check out which plants you have in your garden that are “frost-hardy” and the minimum temperatures they can tolerate. The plants that prefer higher temperatures need at least a few inches of mulch.

  • If you have temperature-sensitive trees in your yard, wrap them in a burlap with staking underneath to prevent the wrap from touching foliage. This protects them from the wind and extreme freezes.
