Healthy Habits for Your Summer Lawn

Professional Lawn Care Howell, Howell Professional Lawn Care
Have you been noticing bare patches on your lawn during these hot summer months?

Here are a few tips for treating and preventing bare patches caused by dollar spots and red thread:

Healthy Habits: Regular watering and proper mowing can make a big difference. Avoid cutting your grass too short when mowing. For tips on proper watering, see last month’s article on watering and fertilizing.

Feed Your Lawn: A soil test can reveal nutrient deficiencies. Ever So Green can perform one for you, then address any nutrient shortages with a balanced fertilizer to strengthen your grass.

Cultural Control: Aerate compacted soil to improve drainage, especially for red thread. Ever So Green can help with this as well.

Treatment Options: If prevention fails, fungicides can be a last resort. However, a healthy lawn is the best defense. By addressing underlying causes and creating an environment resistant to diseases, you can enjoy a beautiful green lawn all season long.

Recognizing Dollar Spots and Red Thread

Professional Lawn Care Howell, Howell Professional Lawn Care
Do you know how to identify dollar spots and red thread?

Dollar spots and red thread are both fungal diseases that can leave your grass patchy and unhealthy. If you see either of these on your lawn, don’t worry—with a little knowledge and care, you can get your lawn back on track.

Here’s how to identify them:

Dollar Spot: Look for circular patches, about the size of a dollar that turn light tan or brown with reddish-brown borders. This disease thrives in hot, dry weather on lawns lacking nitrogen.

Red Thread: This fungus is identified by pinkish-red, thread-like structures growing from the tips of infected blades, resembling tiny antlers. Patches can range from a few inches to several feet wide, with a mix of healthy and discolored grass. Red thread prefers cool, damp conditions and low nitrogen levels.

Both of these diseases love unbalanced lawns. The best guard against them is keeping up with preventative care.

Get a Jump on Spring Weeds!

Professional Lawn Care Howell, Howell Professional Lawn Care
Do you have a plan for bringing your lawn up to snuff when spring arrives?

Before you can revel in all your yard has to offer this coming season, it’ll need to be whipped into shape after the dormant winter months.

One of the most important things you can do is get a jump on weeds. Pre-emergent herbicides will help fend off annual weeds such as crabgrass before they rear their ugly heads. Pre-emergents are most effective when the soil reaches weed-germination temperature — 58 degrees Fahrenheit in the case of crabgrass.

It's Time to Start Thinking About Spring Lawn Care

Professional Lawn Care Howell, Howell Professional Lawn Care
Looking forward to the return of spring?

Spring is almost here, which means more time outdoors enjoying cookouts, backyard games, and other fair-weather activities. Here are two things you can do to start preparing your lawn for the coming season:

Tune up your lawn mower: After sitting idle in your garage or tool shed all winter, your mower will need a little TLC. Check the spark plug, clean, or replace the air filter, change the oil, and get the blade sharpened.

Clean up debris: In the spring, your yard will play host to fallen leaves, sticks, twigs, and other debris. If not removed, this layer of plant scraps can smother your lawn and leave unsightly dead patches. Clearing this refuse also makes way for more effective herbicide and fertilizer treatments.

Three Tips for Protecting Your Grass from Winter Salt

Professional Lawn Care Livingston County, Livingston County Professional Lawn Care
Did you know that rock salt can damage your lawn?

When rock salt sits on your lawn, it draws moisture out of the grass and soil. If it stays there long enough, it can actually upset the chemistry of the soil.

Here are three simple ways you can protect your lawn:
  1. Only spread rock salt on paved areas (and be careful when you throw salt using a spreader).
  2. Use a short silt fence guard around your grass to keep salt and melted runoff from spilling into your lawn.
  3. Use de-icing alternatives, such as sand or calcium magnesium acetate (CMA).

Be Careful with De-Icers!

Livingston County Professional Lawn Care Company, Professional Lawn Care Company Livingston County
Do you use rock salt to de-ice your sidewalk or road?

Even if you live in Michigan, you may not know that the city of Detroit sits on a rock salt mine. The mine was discovered in 1895 and spreads out over more than 1,500 acres. Easy access to rock salt makes it the primary de-icer used by Michigan cities, homeowners, and businessowners.

Slipping on the sidewalk can lead to serious injuries, and your driveway can be treacherous after a heavy snowfall. This is where rock salt and chemical de-icers come in handy by adding traction.

Unfortunately, rock salt has one big disadvantage: it can seriously damage your lawn, especially after repeated use in the winter. When rock salt sits on your lawn, it draws moisture out of the grass and soil. If it stays there long enough, it can actually upset the chemistry of the soil.

There are several things you can do to help protect your lawn. Read about them in our January article.

When is the Best Time to Apply Grub Control Products?

Dry patches in early spring to mid-summer show that grubs have developed into adults. Grubs regularly eat grass roots, so you’ll probably notice grass and soil damage.
You may also notice spongy spots or ground that gives a little as you walk on it. This could indicate an infestation.

Finally, if you’ve noticed more creatures feasting on your lawn, that’s a sure sign you have grubs. Look out for an increase in the number of birds, raccoons, skunks, or moles.

When applying treatments, preventing grubs and killing the ones already damaging your lawn require different methods. It’s best to put down grub preventers in June and July just before the grubs begin to hatch. This provides the best preventative control for the next season.

Ever So Green recommends grub treatment on lawns in mid-summer, but we can also treat your lawn in the spring if necessary. Contact us to find out the best time to treat your lawn.

How to Get Rid of Lawn Grubs and Fungus

Lawn Care Companies Howell, Howell Lawn Care Companies
Do you wish your lawn was as green and lush as a golf course?

Have you tried everything to get rid of unsightly brown patches, or spots that don’t look right?

The best thing to do to tackle tricky lawn problems is to hire one of the professional lawn care companies in Howell. Experts who know the right products and techniques are the best people to take care of your lawn!

In the meantime, there are some things you can do to help temper these issues before they get out of hand.

  • Treating brown spots requires a little more care – diagnosing the underlying cause (fungus, bugs, grubs, etc.) – but ultimately can be solved with fertilizing and a steady lawn care routine.
  • Treating the lawn before grubs hatch and before weeds start to sprout is the best way to get pests and weeds under control before the problem starts.
  • Crabgrass is a troublemaker, but this is another weed that can be treated before it appears in the first place. Try a crabgrass preventer in early spring to stop it from sprouting and protect your lawn all season.
  • Stripes of yellow grass usually mean you’ve applied fertilizer wrong – hire the professionals to make sure you’re using the right type of fertilizer and that it’s applied correctly during the right season.

Best Tips for Spreading Fertilizer this Spring

professional lawn care howell

Ready to make your lawn a green oasis?

Spring fertilization is the first step to your greenest grass, so you want to make sure you get it right. Follow these fertilizing tips for foolproof lawncare.

1. Get the timing right.

Make sure you need to wait until soil temperatures reach 55° Fahrenheit. You can check temperatures with a probe thermometer or wait until the grass starts growing.

2. Broadcast it.

We recommend applying fertilizer with broadcast spreaders over drop spreaders. They are easy to use and spread your application farther to help you overlap rows and avoid a stripey yard.

Choosing the Right Fertilizer for Spring

professional lawn care howell
Want the best lawn in the neighborhood this spring?

You can be the envy of your neighbors with a lush, green yard. The first step to success is choosing the right fertilizer. Follow these simple tips to get it done!

Fast or slow?

Slow-release lawn fertilizers are typically your best choice. The nutrients in these formulas take longer to break down and allow you to spread fertilizer less frequently. You can wait up to eight weeks between applications with slow-release.

Granules or liquid?

When you’re applying your own fertilizer, granules are the best choice because it makes application easy and cost effective. All you need is an inexpensive spreader!

How much is too much?

When you know nitrogen leads to greener grass, it can be tempting to apply as much as possible. But going overboard on nitrogen will cause your grass to grow too fast and leave you mowing constantly. Stick to the ratio we recommended above and save yourself the extra effort.

Get Rid of Stubborn Garden Weeds with Professional Lawn Care

Are stubborn garden weeds making gardening less relaxing and more of a chore?

Have you tried every trick in the book to get rid of these common weeds in your lawn:

  • Dandelions – Yellow, petal-like flowers, serrated leaves, and a hollow stalk. Dandelions spread by seeds that germinate year-round and this plant can have a long, deep root.
  • Crabgrass – Flat, pointed, narrow leaves. The flower heads appear spiky. This spreads by seeds and lower stem pieces that take root deep in your lawn.
  • Thistle – Prickly, deeply-lobed leaves. White, purple, or pink flowers top this weed. It spreads by seeds and root fragment and can grow a couple of feet tall if left unattended!
  • Ground ivy – Rounded, scalloped leaves that look like mint topped with a purple flower. Spreads by seed and above-ground runners that root deep.

Cool Season vs. Warm Season Grasses

There are many different varieties of grasses growing in residential lawns. In general, grasses are divided into two types: cool season and warm season. Cool season grasses are most popular in the United States for their ability to retain a green color throughout cold weather (though cool season grasses will eventually fade or brown in the coldest temperatures.) Examples of cool season grasses include Kentucky bluegrass, tall and fine fescue and ryegrass.

Warm season grasses usually brown after the first frost of the year. Though primarily used in the Southern US, they can be found all the way up to the Canadian border. Bermuda grass, zoysia and buffalo grass are all varieties of warm season grass.

Because of their different growth patterns, warm and cool season grasses must be fertilized at different times in the year. To find out exactly what kind of grass you have and the best times to fertilize, contact Ever So Green at 517-518-8523!

Do I Need to Aerate My Lawn? When to Hire a Professional Lawn Care Company

Aeration is a technique that loosens compacted soil, allowing for air, water and fertilizer to reach the grass at its roots. Special tools (mechanized or manual) perforate the lawn with small, uniform holes that allow elements to move freely through the soil without damaging the grass’ roots.

If you’re going to fertilize your lawn, apply weed control or seed, it is important to aerate your lawn. For fertilizer and weed control, aeration is essential for allowing those compounds to spread evenly throughout the soil. In the case of applying seed, you’ll want to aerate in order to ensure the seeds have ample room for root growth.

Read more about aeration and fertilization by a professional lawn care company on our website!

Your lawn may be especially need aeration if it gets heavy traffic, originated from sod, has a spongy feel or if your home is newly constructed. Any of these factors can contribute to heavy compaction soil or the stripping of essential layers. For more information, contact the experts at Ever So Green at 517-518-8523.
