Midsummer is Grub Control Season!

A picture of two grubs with the caption "Grubs are the C-shaped larvae of beetles that feed on grassroots," demonstrating the importance of grub control services.
Have you thought about how you’re going to protect your lawn from grubs?

As summer heats up, your lawn becomes especially vulnerable to grub infestations — the C-shaped larvae of beetles that feed on grassroots. Left unchecked, these pests can wreak havoc on your lawn, causing weakened turf, brown patches, and increased vulnerability to drought and disease.

Ever So Green recommends mid-summer grub control, typically in midsummer, as part of our service plans. Combined with fertilization, weed control, and aeration, this enhances curb appeal and strengthens lawn resilience.

How Grubs Harm Your Lawn

A graphic of a grub with a "no" symbol over it, standing for Ever So Green's grub control services.
Why is grub control so important for your lawn?

Beetles lay eggs in late spring to early summer, and those eggs hatch into grubs in June and July. This is the critical developmental window when grubs are small, just starting to feed, and most vulnerable to control efforts.

Grubs munch on grassroots, which can lead to loose, spongey soil and dead patches as turf loses root support. It can also Attract wildlife digging for larvae (e.g. skunks, raccoons, birds), causing further lawn damage.

Ever So Green treatments strike at the heart of grub activity, preventing root damage that leads to spongy turf and brown spots.

Fertilization in April

Lawn Fertilization Highland, Highland Lawn Fertilization
Spring is finally here! How can you set up your lawn for year-long success?

The Answer is Fertilization!

A well-fed lawn is better equipped to beat out weeds and resist stress from heat and drought later in the season. Applying a balanced spring fertilizer in April provides nutrients like nitrogen, and potassium, promoting healthy root development and vibrant green growth.

Additional April Lawn Care Tips
  • Mowing: Begin regular mowing as soon as your grass starts growing actively. Keep mower blades sharp and cut no more than one-third of the grass height at a time.
  • Aeration: If your lawn has compacted soil, early spring aeration can improve water and nutrient absorption.
  • Overseeding: If you have thin or bare patches, April is a good time to overseed and encourage thick turf coverage before summer stress sets in.

Crabgrass Control in April

Lawn Fertilization Highland, Highland Lawn Fertilization
Did you know that both crabgrass and broadleaf weeds show up in April?

As spring arrives in full force, April is an important month for setting up a lush, green lawn that will last throughout the year. With warming temperatures and increased sunlight, grass begins its rapid growth phase—but so do crabgrass and broadleaf weeds. This is the time to take action with crabgrass control, broadleaf weed management, and fertilization.

Crabgrass Control

Crabgrass is one of the most troublesome weeds in lawns, thriving in thin, weak turf areas. April is the ideal time to apply a pre-emergent herbicide. Pre-emergent products create a barrier that prevents crabgrass seeds from germinating. Watering in the product after application helps activate it and enhances its weed-blocking power.

Strategies for Managing Crabgrass

Weed Control South Lyon, South Lyon Weed Control
Crabgrass is a stubborn weed! How can you best manage its growth on your lawn?

In our last blog, we talked about why it’s important to stay on top of crabgrass in the spring. Now, here are some IRL strategies for managing it:

Effective Crabgrass Management Strategies
  • Pre-Emergent Herbicides: Pre-emergent herbicides are herbicides used to control weeds before they appear. Applying a pre-emergent herbicide in early spring prevents crabgrass seeds from germinating. The best time for application is late March to early May.
  • Post-Emergent Herbicides: If crabgrass has already emerged, post-emergent herbicides can target existing plants. However, they are less effective once the weeds have matured.
  • Regular Lawn Maintenance: Proper mowing, watering, and fertilization promote a dense and healthy lawn, making it more difficult for crabgrass to overtake the grass you want. Overseeding thin areas with the grass you want can also help prevent crabgrass from taking hold.
  • Timely Fertilization: Starting fertilization in early spring (around March) provides essential nutrients to your lawn as it begins its growth phase, increasing its resilience against weeds.

The Importance of Managing Crabgrass

Weed Control South Lyon, South Lyon Weed Control
Should you try to prevent crabgrass, or just leave it alone?

Crabgrass is one of the tougher weeds that will show up on your lawn in the spring. Known for its low-growing, quick-spreading nature, crabgrass thrives in warmer weather, forming dense patches that can smother your grass. Managing crabgrass is an essential step towards maintaining a lush, healthy lawn.

Why Is Managing Crabgrass Important?
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Crabgrass disrupts the uniform appearance of your lawn, unsightly patches lowering curb appeal.
  • Resource Competition: Crabgrass competes with grass for water, nutrients, and sunlight, which weakens your lawn and make it more vulnerable to other issues.
  • Prevention of Spread: Crabgrass spreads wide and fast. If left unchecked, it can quickly form dense patches that get more challenging to control over time.
