What a Good Winterization Program Covers

What does a quality winterization program include?

Fertilization is the core, but a complete winterization program goes a little further:

  1. Keep mowing until growth stops. Don't stop mowing just because it's September. Keep cutting as the grass grows, and gradually lower the blade for the final few cuts of the season. Tall grass left going into winter can mat down and trap moisture, which encourages snow mold.
  2. Clear the leaves. A thick layer of leaves smothers the grass and traps moisture under the snow. Rake or mulch them before the first heavy snowfall.
  3. Address bare or thin spots. Late fall is a good window to overseed thin areas so they're established before winter and don't invite weeds come spring.
  4. Let the roots breathe. Core aeration in the fall relieves soil compaction so water, air, and nutrients can reach the roots — especially helpful after a summer of foot traffic.

A professional lawn care service handles all of that for you. They know the right timing for your specific lawn, use the right winterization blend, and apply it evenly so you don't have to guess.

Why Winterization Matters

Photo of raking leaves in autumn.
Is your lawn ready for the cold Michigan months ahead?

Your grass doesn't stop living when the temperature drops. It goes dormant, but it's still using stored energy to survive the freeze-thaw cycles, ice, and heavy snow that Michigan winters throw at it. A lawn that enters winter hungry, stressed, or diseased is far more likely to suffer winterkill — the dead, brown patches you see scattered across lawns every spring.

Winterization does three things:

  • Feeds the roots so the lawn has stored energy to draw on all winter.
  • Strengthens the grass against cold stress and disease like snow mold.
  • Sets up a cleaner start in spring, so the lawn greens up faster and needs less corrective work.

Think of it as putting your lawn to bed properly instead of just shutting the lights off.

Winterizing in October

Livingston County Lawn Fertilizer Services, Lawn Fertilizer Services Livingston County
How do you winterize your lawn?

Winterizing is about prepping your lawn for the dormant winter period. Here are the key steps to winterizing your lawn:

Remove Fallen Leaves. Leaves left to pile up can smother your grass, blocking sunlight and trapping moisture, which encourages disease. Rake up leaves regularly or mulch them into the soil.

Aerate the Lawn. Aerating helps break up compacted soil, allowing air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots. October is an ideal time to aerate since the soil is still warm, and the grass has time to recover before winter.

Winterize Your Mower and Tools. Don’t forget about your lawn equipment! After your final mow, clean your mower blades and empty the fuel tank (or add a fuel stabilizer) to prevent clogs or corrosion. Store garden tools properly to prevent rusting.

Autumn Lawn Care Basics

What are the lawn care essentials for October?

October is an important month for lawn care. As temperatures drop, your lawn shifts its energy toward strengthening roots and storing nutrients in preparation for winter. Fertilizing and winterizing your lawn in October ensures that it remains healthy, lush, and ready to thrive once spring arrives.

Here’s what you can do to set up your lawn for success:

  1. Take care of the falling leaves that pile up on your lawn! Mulch dry leaves into tiny pieces by running over them with a lawnmower – or rake them up the old-fashioned way. If leaves pile up, they’ll block sunlight and smother your grass!
  2. Fertilize your lawn! Grass absorbs more nutrients in the fall to prepare for the winter months. This makes September and October a great time to give your grass extra nutrients to help it thrive through the winter.
  3. Take care of weeds—weeds are also going into a high-absorption mode to prepare for the winter, meaning that any weed control you use will be more effective. Many weeds undergo a second bloom and drop another round of seeds in the fall. To protect your lawn, dig them out or use herbicide before they bloom.
  4. Patches of lawn often die in the summertime, which is why you should reseed any dead patches in the fall to let grass grow back before the cold months.
  5. Don’t stop mowing! Keep cutting your grass to a height of 3 inches until the first freeze of winter, when it stops growing. Mow when the grass is long rather than following a calendar schedule.
